Expanding Our Reach

As Peterson Rudgers Group launches a new year, we have terrific news. Julie and I are delighted to announce two new associates: James Cohen and Debra Serwach. Jim and Debbie will help us continue to expand our reach, our impact…and our joy. Our work partnering with clients in strategy, communications and leadership has been especially rewarding, as is teaming with our talented colleagues.

James CohenJim Cohen is an expert in strategic communications planning and execution, having held senior positions at a major foundation and university. This includes serving as director of communications and public outreach at The Kavli Foundation, renowned for its worldwide network of research institutes and as a partner of the international Kavli Prizes, and director of media relations at the University of California, Irvine.

During his 11+ years at Kavli, Cohen designed and implemented a communications strategy that highlighted research at 20 independent institutes, deepening the Foundation’s engagement with leading universities, societies and institutions in the United States, Europe and Asia. He also developed a portfolio of high-impact communications programs aimed at advancing public interest in science, including symposia and workshops attended by many of our foremost science journalists and editors.  Launched during his tenure, he was part of the international leadership team charged with outreach for the Kavli Prizes – today widely recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious awards in science.

Jim’s special expertise in both foundation relations and science communication, especially, will add to PRG’s portfolio of client services. Jim holds a Master of Science degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts from Hampshire College. He is a member of the Authors Guild and Writers Guild of America.

And speaking of joy, it is absolutely delightful to team with my former University of Michigan colleague Debbie Serwach again. She and I worked side-by-side for more than 12 years at U-M, and I have long admired her wide range of skills and wonderful demeanor. Debbie will serve as executive assistant, supporting PRG’s ever-busier project and client schedule. Our current projects include long-range strategic planning efforts, institutional positioning and branding initiatives, the development of comprehensive communications plans, and leadership coaching and support for 14 active clients, ranging from large universities and small colleges to foundations and K-12 schools.
